Nottinghamshire moved into the box seat in their County Championship match against Warwickshire on a day when both teams were ensured of their Division One status.
With second-bottom Lancashire all out for 177 at Worcestershire, both Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire became safe from relegation just before 17:00 BST on the third day at Trent Bridge.
In their match, Nottinghamshire put themselves in with a chance of pushing for victory after piling up 487 in their first innings before reducing Warwickshire to 143-4 at stumps.
Kyle Verreynne, Nottinghamshire’s South Africa Test wicket-keeper, sped to a first century in England en route to an unbeaten 148 before Sam Hain stood firm for the visitors with 59 not out as they closed 344 behind.
The hosts started the penultimate day of the season on 324-6 and made steady progress with Verreynne receiving good support from Rob Lord (31), Brett Hutton (29), Farhan Ahmed (10 and Jacob Duffy (29) as he compiled an impressive hundred.
Warwickshire, in contrast, could hardly have had a worse start to their reply as openers Rob Yates and Alex Davies both fell cheaply.
Will Rhodes, who passed 1,000 runs for the season for the first time in his career, and Hain responded by putting on 99 for the third wicket before the former lost his off stump for 37 as Ahmed (2-33) beat the outside edge.
Dan Mousley fell two balls later for a duck in what was an eventful over which saw 16-year old Ahmed, who now has 21 wickets in six innings since his debut, require lengthy attention after being hit on the left arm by his captain Haseeb Hameed’s full-blooded shy at the non-striker’s stumps.
Mousley’s dismissal left Warwickshire on 105-4 but Hain and Ed Barnard (21 not out) ensured there were no further setbacks as the visitors battle to avoid defeat.
