Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings admitted that his team were "fundamentally not good enough" after their big defeat by Durham.

The loss, by an innings and 63 runs, was their third consecutive innings defeat in the County Championship.

They only collected one point and remain in the relegation zone in Division One, now 11 points adrift of safety with two matches to go.

"What we are producing is just fundamentally not good enough," Jennings told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It's just not good enough to compete at the minute."

Defeat at Chester-le-Street where England bowler Matthew Potts took a career-best 9-68, was preceded by similar thrashings from Hampshire and leaders Surrey.

It leaves Lancashire with games at home to title-chasing Somerset and away to Worcestershire to avoid relegation for the first time since 2018.

Although the Red Rose have used a number of younger players in red-ball cricket this season, Jennings is not prepared to accept that as an excuse.

"We've got two really, really big games," he said. "It could come down to eight days of cricket.

"We are young, but that's no excuse. We have to turn up."
