Former Northamptonshire head coach David Ripley is returning to the club to take charge of their women's team ahead of next year's restructure of the domestic game.

The 57-year-old former wicketkeeper guided Northants to T20 Blast trophy wins in 2013 and 2016 and two promotions in the County Championship.

The women's team will be in tier two in 2025 as part of the new set-up being introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

"David’s track record as both a player and a coach made him the outstanding candidate and we are convinced he will lead our women’s team into a bright future and drive the highest possible standards," said chief executive Ray Payne.

Northamptonshire will play against Derbyshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Kent, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Sussex, Worcestershire and Yorkshire in new 50-over and 20-over competitions.

They will replace the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Charlotte Edwards Cup competitions featuring regional teams.

"I’m delighted to be joining the women’s Steelbacks as head coach. It’s exciting times ahead as the new format is rolled out," said Ripley, who played in 588 matches during his 18-season career.

"As well as a competitive senior team, I hope to help develop our younger girls into future professional players, in partnership with our pathway coaches."
