Teenager Archie Vaughan, son of Michael, was run out without facing a ball on his Somerset debut

Somerset teenager Archie Vaughan had a debut to remember as he was part of a winning side against Kent.

The son of former England skipper Michael Vaughan was making his county debut at the age of 18, fresh from appearing on England Under-19 duty.

And Vaughan certainly had an interesting experience, bowling six tidy overs of off-spin for just 16 runs before then out being unluckily run out backing up without facing a ball when Australian Charlie Stobo finger-tipped Andy Umeed's drive onto the stumps.

On a day when the four remaining sides who were yet to feature in the competition all played for the first time, two claimed their first wins.

Hampshire, thanks largely to 139 not out from Ben Brown, and Somerset, for whom opener Umeed hit a ton were both winners in Group A.

“I felt terrible about Archie Vaughan being run out backing up without facing, having bowled so well," Umeed told BBC Radio Somerset.

"It was actually quite a good shot I played and just one of those things. I just tried to put it out of my mind and concentrate on completing the job and scoring a hundred."

Warwickshire List A skipper Ed Barnard had a personal One-Day Cup campaign to remember in 2023 when he ended up top run scorer, with 616, and took 11 wickets.

And the former Worcerstershire and England Lions all-rounder is clearly intent on doing it all over again with both bat and ball in 2024.

After his match-winning century to beat Essex at Chelmsford on Wednesday, this time he starred with the ball, taking 4-21, while fellow seamer Craig Miles claimed three wickets as holders Leicestershire were shot out for just 88 to lose by eight wickets to the Bears in Group B.

The day's other Group B victors were Nottinghamshire, who got off the mark after losing their opening game to Leicestershire.

Group A - Brown ton sets up Hampshire win

Centurion Brown was also celebrating a century of List A appearances as he reached three figures in List A cricket for the first time for Hampshire as they completed a comfortable 71-run win over Northamptonshire.

Jack White took three quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 25-3 in the seventh over, but Hampshire had an 118-run sixth-wicket stand between Brown and Felix Organ (59) to thank for helping them recover from 96-5 to post 285-8.

The Hampshire wicketkeeper had only previously hit one white-ball hundred – 105 for his old club Sussex against Middlesex in 2021 – but Brown soared past that.

Eddie Jack (4-29) and Tom Prest (3-41) then both enjoyed career-best bowling figures as Northants were bowled out for 214.

Somerset were made to work harder than might have been expected before finally running out three-wicket winners over Kent at Taunton.

Joey Evison (55) and Grant Stewart (51) both hit half-centuries, while Hamidullah Qadri made a rapid 43 as Kent posted a target of 267 all out off 49 overs.

Left-armer spinner Lewis Goldsworthy returned from loan with Leicestershire to claim a List A career-best 4-44, while seamer Alfie Ogborne weighed in with 3-58.

But former Warwickshire and Scotland opener Umeed maintained his fine One-Day Cup form.

He averaged 87.57 last summer to end up as the country's second top scorer on 613, just three runs behind Barnard. And he started back again in similar style, with an unbeaten 114.

With James Rew making 71 in a third-wicket stand of 121 with Umeed, and England discard Jack Leach settling nerves at the end with a slog-sweep six, Somerset got home in the end with 21 balls in hand.

Group B - Barnard leads Fox hunt at Leicester

Barnard did not take long to make an impact at Leicester as Warwickshire eased to an eight-wicket win over Leicestershire in what should have been a day-nighter, but was all over long before the shadows had lengthened.

After putting the Foxes in, Barnard took four quick wickets, including India Test star Adjinkya Rahane, to reduce the hosts to 40-4.

As well as the three for Miles, Olly Hannon-Dalby, Will Rhodes and Jake Lintott all claimed a wicket apiece as Leicestershire were bowled out in just 25.4 overs.

In only his second game following his back-dated ban, former Bears fast bowler Chris Wright then took two wickets in as many balls to remove openers Barnard with the last ball of the third over and youngster Theo Wylie with the first ball of the fifth.

But former skipper Rhodes (48*) put together an unbroken stand of 85 with England Under-19s captain Hamza Shaikh (34*) to steer their side home inside 18 overs.

The bubbling Bears now face a third successive away game at Hove on Sunday against Sussex.

Fynn Jake Hudson-Prentice got almost half the Sussex all-out score of 216 as he made 90 against Nottinghamshire at Nettleworth.

Freddie McCann and Jack Haynes, with his second duck in successive innings, then both went cheaply as the hosts wobbled on 7-2.

But Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed helped turn things round, both hitting unbeaten tons as Notts bounced back from defeat at Leicester in their opening match with a eight-wicket victory.

Opener Slater, who averages over 50 in List A cricket, hit 107, while Notts skipper Hameed finished unbeaten on 101 as they shared a county List A third-wicket record partnership of 209 - to erase the names of Matt Wood and David Hussey from the Notts record books.

This year's One-Day Cup format

This is the fourth season in which the English first-class counties' main one-day knockout final will be held away from Lord's.

The final will again be held at Trent Bridge on Saturday 22 September.

As in the three previous years, the top three sides from each group will get through to the knockout stages.

The two group winners will stage a home semi-final on Saturday, 18 August.

The two sides finishing second in the group will stage a home quarter-final on Thursday, 16 August against the two sides finishing third. The winners of each will face an away semi-final two days later.
