India batter Shreyas Iyer has been in touch with the team from hospital after suffering a lacerated spleen against Australia on Saturday.

The 30-year-old sustained the injury while taking a catch in the third one-day international in Sydney, running backwards to dismiss Alex Carey and landing on his side in the 34th over.

Iyer received treatment on the field before being taken to hospital.

India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday: "I have been talking to him over the last two days. He has been replying.

"It's looking good. They will keep him under observation for a few days."

Suryakumar said doctors and physiotherapists described the injury as "rare".

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not put a timeline on Iyer's return.

It said in a statement on Monday: "The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status.

"The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."

India won the match by nine wickets but lost the series 2-1.

A five-match T20 series begins in Canberra on Wednesday.

Iyer has scored 2,917 runs at an average of 47.81 in 73 ODIs since his debut in 2017.
