England's all-time leading wicket-taker James Anderson and former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin both went unsold in the International League T20 auction in the United Arab Emirates.

Ashwin, 39, retired from the Indian Premier League to allow him to pursue franchise opportunities around the world and has signed a deal to play in Australia's Big Bash League.

Anderson, 43, featured in The Hundred for Manchester Originals this summer but has also failed to get picked up in the IPL, SA20 and Big Bash since his retirement from Test cricket last summer.

West Indies batter Andre Fletcher commanded the biggest fee at $260,000 (approx £193,000).

That was closely followed by Hampshire bowler Scott Currie, who went for $250,000 (approx £185,000). Currie has represented Scotland but was called into England's T20 squad for the tour of Ireland in September but did not feature.

England all-rounder Liam Dawson sold for $170,000 (£126,000), while spinner Nathan Sowter and seamer Tymal Mills went for $100,000 (£74,000) and $80,000 (£59,000) respectively.

  9. Ashwin signs for Sydney Thunder in boost to Big Bashpublished at 10:23 BST 25 September

    Ravichandran AshwinImage source, Getty Images

Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will play for Sydney Thunder in this winter's Big Bash League and will become the first men's India international to play in the T20 league.

Ashwin, 39, will travel to Australia following his commitments at the ILT20, likely in early January.

He retired from international cricket in December 2024 and from the Indian Premier League last year, making him eligible for global franchise leagues.

In announcing the deal, the Big Bash described it as "one of the biggest signings in BBL history".

It will be hoped a player of Ashwin's stature - he played 287 times for India and is one of the greatest Test spinners of his generation - can boost the league's profile.

The Big Bash is considering private investment into its' eight franchises, which would follow on from similar deals for The Hundred.

The Hundred sales generated more than £500m with four franchises bought by India-based groups.

Ashwin will play under former Australia opener David Warner at Thunder.

"Thunder were crystal clear about how they'd use me and brave enough to back it," Ashwin said.

"My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we're fully aligned on my role.

"I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it's always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can't wait to perform for the Thunder Nation."

The ILT20, which begins in early December, will be Ashwin's first experience of a franchise league outside of the IPL. His team is expected to be confirmed at next week's auction.

Former England coach Lisa Keightley has been named Mumbai Indians coach in place of Charlotte Edwards.

Edwards, 45, was named England women's coach in May and subsequently stood down from her roles in franchise cricket, including at the Women's Premier League.

She led Mumbai to the title in two of the tournament's three seasons and reached the play-offs in the other.

Australian Keightley, a former international batter and two-time World Cup winner, was England coach between 2020 and 2022.

She also led Northern Superchargers to their first title in The Hundred this summer and has previously worked in the WPL as an assistant coach at Delhi Capitals, as a head coach in the Big Bash and with Australia.

"It's an honour to join the Mumbai Indians, a team that has set the benchmark in the WPL," Keightley said.

"The culture of excellence and care is something I deeply admire.

"I look forward to working with this talented group to build on our success and continue inspiring on and off the field."

Ashwin, one of India's greatest spinners, played nine matches for Chennai Super Kings in this year's IPL

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has signed up for the auction for this winter's ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates.

The 39-year-old, who retired from international duty last December and from the Indian Premier League in August, is understood to have entered at a base price of $120,000 (£89,000) - the highest of any player.

Ashwin is set to become the highest profile Indian player travelling to play on the T20 franchise circuit.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow any player in Indian international or domestic cricket to feature in overseas leagues in an attempt to protect the IPL.

Reports in Australia suggest Ashwin will play in the Big Bash after his participation in the ILT20.

The ILT20 runs from 2 December to 4 January this winter with England internationals Phil Salt, Sam Curran, Tom Banton, Liam Livingstone and Dan Lawrence among those already signed or retained by franchises.

The Big Bash runs from 15 December to 25 January, meaning Ashwin could be available at the back-end of the league phase and for the play-offs.

The ILT20 auction takes place on 1 October.

England's leading wicket-taker James Anderson has also entered as he continues to look for franchise opportunities following his international retirement.

Anderson played three matches in The Hundred this summer but failed to pick up a deal in the Big Bash or SA20.

  12. Pollard criticises boos after winning CPL awardpublished at 10:59 BST 22 September

    Kieron PollardImage source, Getty Images

Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard was named player of the tournament at this year's Caribbean Premier League after helping Trinbago Knight Riders to victory.

The 38-year-old scored 383 runs - the most he has scored in a CPL season - while batting at a strike-rate of 174.09.

Afterwards he appeared to criticise those he said had booed him during the competition in an unusual and frustrated post-match interview.

"One thing I will say, there are three countries in the Caribbean where we have played," he said. "The booing is boring now.

"You have a guy who has represented the entire Caribbean, putting them on the map in the format but yet still we are not appreciating him.

"I am not bitter. I feel sorry. This means a lot.

"Five-time champions but we are still the laughing stock of cricket in the world."

Pollard, a T20 World Cup winner in 2012 with West Indies, has mixed coaching with playing in recent years, including with England at last year's T20 World Cup and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, but refused to be drawn on his future.

He now sits just 325 runs behind Chris Gayle at the top of the all-time run-scorers list in T20s.

Trinbago Knight Riders won the Caribbean Premier League for a fifth time with a tense three-wicket victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors in Guyana.

Chasing just 131, Knight Riders slipped to 116-7 before Akeal Hosein, who earlier took 2-26 with his left-arm spin, hit a six and a four to finish 16 not out from seven balls.

Knight Riders won with 12 balls to spare as the tournament's most successful franchise ended a five-year wait for the title.

Former England batter Alex Hales was the highest scorer in their chase but took 34 balls to make 26 on a turning pitch.

Forty-six-year-old leg-spinner Imran Tahir took 3-34, including Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell in consecutive deliveries, while former England all-rounder Moeen Ali conceded only 11 from four overs but Hosein's cameo denied Guyana a second CPL title.

Guyana's 130-8 was below par but somewhat of a recovery, having been 65-5 after 12 overs.

Moeen made 10, Shai Hope 12 and fellow West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer four from 13 balls as the top order struggled but 30 from Iftikhar Ahmed and 25 from Dwaine Pretorius boosted the score.

Victory for Knight Riders also comes in Nicholas Pooran's first year as captain and Dwayne Bravo's first season as coach.

Trinbago Knight Riders cruised into the final of the Caribbean Premier League with a 56-run win over Saint Lucia Kings.

Knight Riders, who are the most successful side in the tournament's history with four titles, posted 194-4 after being asked to bat.

Former England opener Alex Hales hit 58 not out off 44 balls and was supported by Nicholas Pooran (50 off 32), Kieron Pollard (35 off 26) and Andre Russell (28 off 12).

Saint Lucia Kings openers Tim Seifert (57 off 40) and Johnson Charles (17 off 24) shared 59 for the first wicket, but it came in nine overs.

That left them behind the required run-rate and that stayed the same as the defending champions struggled to score against the spin of Sunil Narine (3-18), Akeal Hosein (0-22) and Usman Tariq (4-35).

They eventually finished on 138-8 to slip to a heavy defeat in the second qualifier.

The Knight Riders, who last won the tournament in 2020, will face Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final on Monday (01:00 BST).

Guyana Amazon Warriors reached their third successive Caribbean Premier League final with a nervy 14-run win over Saint Lucia Kings.

After being asked to bat first, the Warriors were bowled out for 157 in the final over. They were 98-5 and 107-6 but Dwaine Pretorius made 17 and Romario Shepherd 21 off eight balls to claw them up to a respectable total.

In reply, defending champions Kings, who beat the Warriors in last year's final, slipped to 48-7 after 8.4 overs.

Khary Pierre shared 37 with Alzarri Joseph for the eighth wicket and then 32 with England's Tymal Mills for the ninth wicket.

Pierre reached his half-century with a six and was giving Kings a chance with 41 needed from 20 balls but he became Gudakesh Motie's fourth wicket the next ball.

Mills clubbed three fours and a six in the next couple of overs to leave 15 required from the last over.

However he was caught at cover from the first ball to leave Warriors one win away from claiming their second title.

In addition to last year's runners-up finish, the Warriors were also beaten in the final five times between 2013 and 2019.

The Kings will have a second chance to reach Monday's final (01:00 BST) when they face Trinbago Knight Riders in the Qualifier 2 on Saturday (01:00).

Sunril Narine became the Caribbean Premier League's all-time leading wicket-taker before Nicholas Pooran and Alex Hales powered Trinbago Knight Riders to a nine-wicket victory in the eliminator against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

Narine had Falcons captain Imad Wasim caught at long-off for his 130th CPL wicket - one more than former West Indies team-mate Dwayne Bravo.

He took 1-36, United States left-armer Saurabh Netravalkar 3-23 and off-spinner off-spinner Usman Tariq 2-19 as Falcons were limited to 166-8.

Pooran and Hales then made light work of the chase by sealing victory with 15 balls to spare for the loss of only one wicket.

They put on an unbroken stand of 143 after the loss of Colin Munro for 14. Pooran finished Pooran 90 not out from 53 balls and Hales 54 unbeaten from 40.

Left-hander Pooran had 43 from 35 balls and Hales 42 from 30 but Pooran crashed six sixes and a four to take 47 runs from his last 18 balls as he kicked on for victory.

It means Knight Riders will play the loser of Thursday's first qualifier between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Saint Lucia Kings for a place in the final.

The narrow margin of defeat confirmed the Kings will finish in the top two - and have two chances to reach the final. Warriors face Barbados Royals in the final group game on Monday (00:00 BST) and a win could see them finish in the top two on net run-rate.

The Warriors needed four to win from the last ball to complete their chase of 186 and South Africa's Dwaine Pretorius hit David Wiese over long-on for six.

It is the second time in two seasons that Pretorius has hit a final-ball six to seal a win for the Warriors.

They needed 12 from the final over and former England all-rounder Moeen Ali was dropped off a no-ball from the second ball, before being run out from the third.

They were in control of the chase at 103-1 after 11 overs but Quentin Sampson fell for 76 off 39 balls and sparked a collapse of five wickets for 30 runs.

Shai Hope (44 off 34) shared 28 with Moeen, who then put on 18 with Pretorius.

Earlier, the Kings posted 185-4 after opting to bat first. They were 27-2 but Ackeem Auguste made 50 off 30 balls in a stand of 90 with Roston Chase, who finished 90 not out off 55 balls.
