    Markram 29, Mulder 27

There was a genuine edge, moving away from Alex Carey, might have been half a chance.

  3. SA 58-1published at 14 overs

Edged just in front of the keeper!

Pat Cummins finds the outside of Aiden Markram's bat and the ball drops just short of a diving Alex Carey before flying away for four.

A few rueful looks in the cordon but I'm not sure you can count that as a chance.

South Africa have got a lot to do but they've done a cracking job so far.

We know how the mood changes after a wicket had been lost but this partnership is going ok at the moment.

Re: Cummins - coming on at first change can be a help to swing bowlers. Ian Botham did that and bagged 383 Test wickets.

We're starting to see the squeeze from Australia. South Africa were scoring very easily to start off with but as the balls got softer, their scoring has slowed down.

  10. SA 49-1published at 12 overs

Change of ends for Pat Cummins as he replaces Josh Hazlewood.

A second tight over, with Aiden Markram scoring the only run off the bat, pushing the ball to Nathan Lyon at mid-off and beating his throw at the non-striker's end.

I think chasing 282 is certainly on the cards, this is only a day three pitch and a lot better batting conditions than previously. All it will take is one or two of the SA batters to get a score and they're most of the way there!

If South Africa are successful, it will be the joint-highest successful run chase at this ground.

England successfully chased against New Zealand in 2004 and the West Indies chased against England in 1984.

Indeed, here is Nathan Lyon, coming on to replace Pat Cummins with the Australian captain making a second change at this end.

The spinner gets going with a maiden to Wiaan Mulder.

Nathan Lyon is warming up. Pat Cummins knows he has do to something as South Africa look relatively comfortable at the moment.

  16. SA 47-1published at 10 overs

Solid defensive work from this South African pair, fending off Josh Hazlewood and taking a single apiece to fine leg.

The fact that Cummins consistently goes under the radar simply for bowling first change is baffling. He is, statistically, Australia's best bowler despite not bowling with the new ball.

That was a great shot. It was short and punished.

South Africa are certainly going on at a nice rate.

  19. SA 45-1published at 9 overs

    Cracking pull shot!

A short delivery from Pat Cummins and Wiaan Mulder plays a lovely controlled shot, sending the ball away through backward square for four.

  20. SA 41-1published at 8 overs

    Target 282

Josh Hazlewood continues with six deliveries to Aiden Markram.

The opener finds two more with a slice through, you guessed it, point, with the fielder in the deep ensuring there's no boundary.
