Summary

  1. Eng 273-5published at 42.5 overs

You can see the slump in the West Indies shoulders now. All hope seems to drain out of Jayden Seales as he charges in and Joe Root casually knocks him for a single to nudge England closer.

Oh and now Seales has bowled a no-ball to give Root a free hit...

I had doubted Jacks’ place in the team. He’s proving me wrong here.

A sublime knock from Root, obviously - but very impressive from Jacks, too. Measured, mature, patient. Justified both his place and his new position in this team.

England are on their way and can start thinking about winning this game.

  4. Eng 266-5published at 42 overs

Need 43 runs from 46 balls

It may be recency bias but I'm calling this as Root's greatest ODI knock.

The best innings of Root's fellow World Cup winners roll off the tongue - Stokes in the 2019 final, Buttler's ton at Old Trafford v Australia, Jason Roy's 180 at the MCG or Jonny Bairstow v India at Edgbaston - but Root's aren't as easy to recall.

This has been sublime and it has broken West Indies. Alzarri Joseph bangs in four byes.

It has been a masterful innings from Joe Root, it really has.

It's getting up there as his finest ODI knock. This is really special.

Enjoy, people. Batting doesn't get much better than this...

Give Will Jacks some credit here too. It would be easy to get carried away with the flow of boundaries at the other end and try to do the same. He hasn't. He has only hit two fours in this knock and has been there 50 balls.

Oh, it looks great when Joe Root dances down and targets that boundary straight.

My word. This should come with a health warning because it's making me go weak at the knees.

Joe Root straight as you like over the bowler's head.

This is now his highest ODI score.

West Indies are just desperately hoping that England make a mistake and it's felt like that for the last 10 overs.

Joe Root is playing a masterful innings here and, going into the last 10 overs, West Indies will have an extra fielder out and they'll hope that can stop Root's runs but he has already done most of the damage.

England have scored 53 runs in the past five overs.

  12. Eng 245-5published at 40 overs

Need 64 runs from 60 balls

This is remarkable. It's not supposed to be this easy.

Joe Root reached 100 in 98 balls and now has 132 from 115 after another four.

Even if we don't win this it's been a decent fight from England. Can't imagine too many teams win when 3 of your top 5 get ducks.

  14. Eng 239-5published at 39.2 overs

It's all going the way of England and Joe Root with Will Jacks doing the right thing and giving him the strike.

Root eases four more down the ground now.

The pressure that West Indies built up over the first 20 overs or so has completely disappeared.

  16. Eng 234-5published at 39 overs

    Root 123, Jacks 37

There are disgruntled faces among the West Indies coaching staff now. Ravi Rampaul is trying to move the field around from the balcony.

Joe Root and Will Jacks have now put on 101 together. I may have to revise what I said about England not being favourites with only 75 more runs needed.

Joe Root on the pull. Four runs.

Where would we be without Joe Root? If he and Jacks can hang in here, England might have a chance.

What a batter Joe Root is!

That required run-rate I mentioned just a couple of overs ago has now been dragged down to 6.91 by that flurry of Root boundaries.
