    Thanks Elizabeth.

Ashes cricket, what a lark, eh?

First session done - now it's time for the hardcore night owls. Plenty will be going to bed, those getting up for the second session will have set an alarm for 5am.

It's you, slogging through the lunch break, who are showing the true grit. And fear not, I've got a few things lined up to occupy you, stop those eyelids drooping...

Right, I've been babbling on for far too long. Here's Mike Peter to take you through lunch and the second session.

It's been entertaining, gripping, thrilling... disappointing if you're England.

Brook 'hammers' Starc over mid-off for four

Harry Brook brings up England's 100 in style, banging Mitchell Starc up and over mid-off for four. Next ball, he charges again but has to improvise a squirty single as Starc follows him.

As I said earlier, an infuriating batter.

England head into lunch on 105-4, Starc doing the bulk of the damage with 3-24. Australia's session.

  6. Eng 98-4published at 22 overs

Australia have a fielder under a helmet at short leg.

Four singles. Not much happening for spinner Nathan Lyon.

Nathan Lyon didn't look threatening in his first over.

  8. Eng 94-4published at 21 overs

    That's the spirit, Barra.

Mitchell Starc returns to the attack with a maiden. And once again, Harry Brook is swinging wildly, giving himself room and trying to crash it into the off side. He misses.

At lunch on day one, four years ago, we were 59-4. So I guess you could claim this is a level of improvement in terms of runs.

We were just saying how well Ollie Pope has been playing. It's a great delivery from Green but Pope just doesn't quite get that timing right.

England built a really nice partnership there. Losing one just before lunch isn't ideal.

    It's been Australia's session.

Pope is out! The decision is upheld, very full, looking to brush it away to the leg side.

Green has a wicket in his first over.

Green dismisses Pope lbw for 46 as England review fails

    Australia strike just before lunch!

Red, red, and umpire's call on leg stump. Ollie Pope departs for 46 (58). He and Harry Brook had only just celebrated their 50 partnership.

Cameron Green joins Mitchell Starc with a wicket next to his name.

Because the ball was so full, I don't see how it could be missing.

  14. England reviewpublished at 20 overs

Has Cameron Green got Ollie Pope lbw in his first over? The umpire thinks so.

Pope makes the review signal... somewhat reluctantly.

It's been a decent partnership between these two, they need to get England through to lunch.

I've been impressed with Ollie Pope and how he's managed to stay out there whilst his team-mates fell around him.

  16. Eng 84-3published at 19 overs

Four singles and a two off Nathan Lyon's first over.

This opening session has fizzled a bit since the end of Mitchell Starc's burst.

Ollie Pope has looked very calm out there. Usually when he comes out, his first twenty balls are hard to watch.

  19. Eng 78-3published at 18 overs

A much more sensible single from Harry Brook.

Time for spin! Here comes Nathan Lyon, sunnies on.

All this talk of babies on Test Match Special is reminding me of the birth of my first child who was born at 8.07am UK time on 27 November 2010. As my wife laboured (at home) in the birthing pool and me on the sofa, I was able to listen to TMS at Brisbane in the first Test of that famous series.
