It'll be about blocking Duckett and frustrating him. They know he's going to come hard and they won't want to gift him any runs.

They just need one to spin, put some doubt in the batters' mind.

  2. Eng 10-0published at 2 overs

Spin at both ends as expected, with slow-armer Prabath Jayasuriya coming onto bowl at the other end.

Lawrence hustles through a two from the final ball of the over, and might have been in trouble had Angelo Mathews' throw at the stumps been a direct hit.

I'm so intrigued as to what Ben Duckett's mindset will be.

Ben Duckett gets going from De Silva's third ball, crashing the Sri Lankan skipper over extra cover for four.

A single brings Lawrence on strike, and he gets off the mark with a single down to long-on.

It's not a calamitous score, there are runs on the board and that's the main thing.

We have seen some turn and with so many right-handers to work with, I think that Prabath Jayasuriya will enjoy this opportunity.

The pitch did seem to get flatter which could also work against Sri Lanka but I think the innings played by Milan Rathnayake and Dhananjaya de Silva will give them a spring in their step.

Right, the players are out on the field.

Captain Dhananjaya de Silva will open the bowling for Sri Lanka with his off-breaks.

Ben Duckett looks set to face, with Dan Lawrence, back in the side in the unfamiliar position of opener, at the other end.

There's no speed limit, as such. The umpires don't say anything specific like, "Every ball must be under 70mph". It's up to the umpire's discretion.

It hasn't got any darker, so they'll definitely be able to bowl spin. I see it as a great opportunity for Sri Lanka. The downside is you concede 30 in four overs, but then you can just say, "OK, we want to bowl pace" so the umpires take you off.

The upside is that you've got Ben Duckett who loves to go after the spinners and that brings wicket opportunities, and Dan Lawrence, who has never opened in Tests and would've done all his preparation against seam.

Chris Mitchell: At what point do we say England have a major issue bowling against the lower order? Our average for wickets seven to 10 must be the worst in world cricket. No point packing the side with pace bowlers when they haven’t got the guile to go with it.

Well, Chris, we asked Cricviz and you're on to something. England's bowling average against numbers 9-11 since the start of 2023 is 18 and rising. The next worst is Australia (16.76), with Sri Lanka's average of 11 only bettered by Afghanistan and Ireland and mirrored by India.

Well, Sri Lanka are definitely warming up here, so we can expect England to come out.

I must say, it looks significantly gloomier at Old Trafford than it does where I am, a mile away in Salford.

A trick of the camera, or is there just a swirling vortex of darkness in the Old Trafford area?

There's nothing to lose, really. Might as well come out and bowl a couple of overs and just see what happens.

England might be a bit tired, we know that Ben Duckett loves to play his shots against the spinners. And considering their recovery, Sri Lanka will be quite happy.

It's a very interesting situation. Would someone like Angelo Mathews, who bowls little dobblers, be allowed?

Sri Lanka are all out of 236, not the worst total after they were 6-3 and 113-7. England struggled to break through their tail, albeit the light saw them restricted to bowling spinners from shortly after tea.

Woakes (3-32) and Bashir (3-56) are the pick of England's bowlers, with Atkinson taking 2-48 and Wood 1-31.

From Sri Lanka's point of view it makes sense for them to open with spinners either end.

From 92-6 and 113-7, it is a decent recovery in the end.

The umpires were getting a bit twitchy at the end about the light. I don't know if England's openers will come out here, unless Sri Lanka want to open their bowling with spin!

Vishwa Fernando run out 13 (SL 236 all out)

He is well short! Vishwa was about half-way down the track when he was sent back by his teammate, he stood no chance of beating Ollie Pope's throw.

That's the end of the innings, we now wait to see whether England come out to bat in the gloom.

What an absolute mix-up between the Fernandos. A low full toss scruffily played to mid-wicket.

  17. Umpire reviewpublished at 74 overs

Could this be the end of the innings?

Vishwa was sent back after pushing Joe Root's full toss to mid-wicket, he looks well short...

  18. SL 232-9published at 73 overs

Bashir's delivery breaks through everyone and runs away for four behind the keeper.

Vishwa then retains the strike, guiding the ball behind point.

It looks like a series of ghosts are watching but it's just those staying in the hotel with duvets wrapped round them. That wind has been blowing.

  20. SL 227-9published at 72 overs

Root rattles through an over, the only run from it coming when Vishwa Fernando takes a big swing.

The ball comes off the bottom of the bat and runs away for a single.
