That was one of the most incredible finals to one of the most incredible Test series I have seen. Truly remarkable.

England's men do not play again until 2 September, when they begin a white-ball series against South Africa. Harry Brook will lead in that one and many of these Test players will feature.

After that tour they play more white-ball matches in Ireland in late September and New Zealand in October.

After that it's the big one. Their next Test is the first Ashes Test in Perth on 21 November.

Winning crucial moments and getting into a position to win a game - the feeling England have now will drive them on.

You almost have to lose games to win those next games because you then know what the feeling is.

The fact we played on four totally flat wickets surprised me but it's produced some unblievable cricket. I've don't think I've seen two sides as spent after a five-match series as these two sides.

Bumrah plays two, loses two. India win the two he doesn't play. It doesn't make sense but that's cricket.

For this England side, it's another step on that ladder of improvement.

You're relieved that this India side is in good hands and going in the right direction.

When you have Virat and Rohit and Ashwin retiring, Bumrah not available most of the time, you want to see the next generation step up and it's so heartening to see. They're on the right path.

Brook had that thought process that he wanted to hit 30 or 40 quick runs. What Harry needs to learn is in an Ashes series, in a similar situation, just win.

I love the way he plays, his approach. At times, he's a genius. He plays the game in a fashion not many have ever played. I don't want to take away from his positivity and flamboyance. But in Sydney, if England are 2-1 up, dig in Harry.

  9. 'I wish I didn't play that shot' - Brookpublished at 12:42 British Summer Time

'What an incredible dismissal!' - Brook caught on 111 after bat goes flying into the air

Harry Brook, speaking to Test Match Special: "It is a great advert for Test cricket. To rock up with a crowd like this today when we needed 30-odd runs to win is phenomenal.

"I don't think we could get support like that in any other series, other than the Ashes.

"It has been awesome. The most enjoyable series I have played in. We have not left anything out on that pitch. We have been absolutely knackered. A very intense Test series, but a very enjoyable one."

On his second innings dismissal: "I wish I didn't play that shot, but at the time I was very confident. If I got a quick 30 over the next two overs, then the game is done. That was my thought process. Obviously, I wish I was there at the end, but you can't write those things. In the back of my mind it was to get as many runs as quickly as possible.

"I had every faith in Rooty that he would be there at the end. He is an absolute gun. He is an inspiration to many in the game. Hopefully, he is playing for many more years."

"We have got the Hundred coming up. My first game is on Thursday. Fairly quick turnaround - let's see how I get on. A completely different ball game. Go out there and work on a few things and work on a long winter ahead.

"It is going to be awesome - we have a lot of cricket to be played. A lot to look forward to and hopefully everyone stays fit!"

England coach Brendon McCullum on Chris Woakes coming out to bat: "I was surprised he ran the byes. Good on Woakesy, he is in an immense amount of pain. He was never in doubt that if needed he would walk down the stairs and try get us across the line.

"We will assess him over the coming days get some more information and work out what the plan is from there."

This England team will be battle-hardened because of these five matches.

It has been a great series and a lot of those questions have been answered.

To win the big series and big matches you have to win the big moments.

  12. 'I'm looking forward to Australia'published at 12:37 British Summer Time

More from Ben Stokes, speaking to Test Match Special, on whether England expected to win the match: "I think so. Again, the extra pressure and all that stuff that comes with chasing down a total. We got ourselves into some good positions throughout the Test match, not just the last innings. To come within seven runs of victory, it's tough to look back and feel anything but disappointment."

On whether England are ready for the Ashes: "I think there's quite a few members of this Test group who've got a few commitments before that. There's The Hundred and the one-day series against South Africa and Ireland. Then the focus is on the Ashes.

"Being captain of the team, I'll be thinking about that earlier than the others. The way in which we've been able to perform throughout the series, I'm looking forward to getting to Australia and doing what we want to go out there and do."

Touring England, five Test matches, it's one of the most difficult assignments in the cricketing world. These guys have fought til the last day. The series was on the line.

For a young team and a young captain, you're starting with one of the most difficult assignments and then managing to play as well as they did, it's huge for Shubman Gill and this side.

  14. 'We're bitterly disappointed'published at 12:31 British Summer Time

'Here he comes!' - Woakes comes out to bat with arm in sling

England captain Ben Stokes speaking to Test Match Special: "It's been an incredible series, all five games going down to day five, so much has been put into this series from both teams. The commitment and energy has been outstanding. Stood here now, we're bitterly disappointed we couldn't get the series win but myself being a massive advocate of the game of Test cricket, this series has been an unbelievable advert for it across the world. All the doubters saying it's dying a death, this series has said the opposite.

"Credit both teams. The amount of effort from both teams to end up here 2-2 is incredible. Losing Woakesy early on in the game changed the whole responsibility on the bowlers in particular, the roles they were selected for. The heart and passion and everything that was shown, especially in our second bowling innings, I thought was outstanding.

"But you can look back on a Test match that goes five days and pick out loads of moments as to why [we lost]. For us, to came out here to try and chase that total down in the way that we did was outstanding. That never say die, never back down attitude we've installed in the group nearly paid off for us. We couldn't quite get over the line."

England head coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to Test Match Special: "Not just an incredible hour - right throughout this Test match, it has been one of the all-time best Test matches.

"We turned up today with high hopes, but Mohammed Siraj and the passion of the Indian boys was too strong and ultimately they deserve to win this Test match.

"We had our chances we will look back on our dropped catches and the position we were in with the bat. You have to tip your caps sometimes, a guy playing in his fifth Test match bowling 30 overs, and 90mph to get the job done - fair play.

"You never expect things to go according to plan.

"I thought we put ourselves in a position with some wonderful bravery from Harry Brook and Joe Root. We were confident we could chase this down on a wicket which was getting better. We are disappointed, but at the same time we have had a hell of a series. Both teams have been part of the more memorable series that I can remember."

Harry Brook is named England's player of the series after his two hundreds and a 99.

He says yesterday he thought if he hit a quick 20 runs then the game would have been done. He admits with hindsight he wishes he didn't get out playing that aggressive shot.

More from India captain Shubman Gill, speaking to Test Match Special, on Chris Woakes: "Very, very brave. I didn't expect him to come out like that, batting with one hand, the other in the sweater, but good on him for showing that courage."

On what the win and series draw means: "It means so much. This was a very hard-fought series. Both teams throwing punches and you could never really predict after day four who was going to win the match. We are a young team but before the start of the series, we spoke about how we didn't want to be looked at as a young team. We wanted to be a gun team and I think we showed that today."

On the thrill of Test cricket: "Nothing beats it. It's the most rewarding format. You work so hard over five days and even before the Test starts, there's so many mental and physical challenges in this format. Once you're able to succeed, it's the most satisfying and rewarding format."

Mohammed Siraj is a very popular recipient of the player of the match award.

Even England fans are on their feet. To play all five Tests - amid all the speculation around Jasprit Bumrah and his workloads - and then to perform like that with his very last effort, is nothing short of incredible.

    Brook reaches tenth test century

It's been a tremendous five matches for England. You've got to be realistic, this week they were down to 10 men, lost one of their bowlers early, and not got Ben Stokes.

You're looking at the team going to Australia and I think there's more pieces in place. We'll arrive in Perth for that first Test and know the top seven. It's just a matter of the bowling attack and getting that right.

Clearly Ben Stokes is going to have to get fit. With Ben Stokes in the England side they can beat anybody. Without him, they can lose to anybody.

This morning, Ben Stokes in that team, England would've won this Test match. He plays such a big in this team, the mentality.

You go through this morning and England did panic. They just needed one partnership. They panicked in the way that they can with the way that they play, they play with a huge amount of aggressive. Yesterday afternoon, the Harry Brook dismissal it did cause that collapse, but it's the way England play.
