Chris Froome drops to second at Tirreno-Adriatico after stage six

Chris Froome lost the overall lead in the penultimate stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race in Italy as Peter Sagan claimed victory.

In wet conditions, Cannondale rider Sagan broke away in the final 300 metres to finish ahead of Astana's Vincenzo Nibali, with Joaquim Rodriguez of Katusha in third.

Defending champion Nibali takes the overall lead from Team Sky's Froome.

The Briton is second in the general classification, 34 seconds back.

It was a disappointing day for Froome as he was almost a minute down on Sagan, who completed the stage in five hours 45 minutes and 17 seconds

The final stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico is Tuesday's 9.2km time trial.

"It went according to plan but at the end hats off to the other guys. It was one of those days where we didn't quite have the legs at the finish and they went away from us," Team Sky sports director Marcus Ljungqvist said on the Team Sky website.

"You can assess it from so many different angles but down here we agree we did all we could.

"Now we'll get Chris ready for tomorrow. It's always tough to lose the jersey on the penultimate stage but we're not hanging our heads.

"We're happy with the work we've done here."
