Kennaugh said he "just tried to be patient" on Tuesday's stage

Peter Kennaugh put in a heroic display on one of the hardest climbs in Europe to extend his overall lead at the Tour of Austria to 29 seconds on Tuesday.

The Manx cyclist finished the stage, which included the infamous Kitzbuheler Horn in third, 54 seconds behind winner Dayer Quintana of Movistar.

Team Sky's sports director Dan Frost said it was a "tremendous job".

Kennaugh won Sunday's opening stage in his first race in the British national champion's jersey.

The Isle of Man cyclist said: "It was such a steep climb it was just a case of not putting myself into the red.

"I just tried to be patient and did enough to stay in the jersey."

The 25-year-old will represent the Isle of Man on both the road and track at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month.
