The opening night of the Grand Slam of Darts provided several shocks, with defending champion Scott Waites among those to lose their first group games.

Waites, who beat James Wade in the 2010 final, external, lost 5-3 to Dutch youngster Michael van Gerwen in Wolverhampton.

Raymond van Barneveld lost 5-4 to Stoke-on-Trent's Ian White, who came into the tournament as a reserve for the injured Simon Whitlock.

Premier League winner Gary Anderson and Terry Jenkins were also beaten.

Anderson lost 5-3 to debutant Nigel Heydon, while Jenkins was hammered 5-1 by Justin Pipe, who lost all three of his group matches in 2010.

Home favourite Wayne Jones, James Wade, Mark Walsh and Lakeside runner-up Dean Winstanley were also victorious on the opening night.

The remaining 16 players in the field, including three-times Grand Slam winner Phil Taylor and reigning PDC world champion Adrian Lewis, make their first appearances in the competition on Sunday afternoon.

Taylor faces Norfolk teenager James Hubbard, who will be making his television debut at the Civic Hall, while Lewis takes on Martin Phillips, who reached the semi-finals at Lakeside in January.
