Defending champion Phil Taylor overcame an early scare before beating Rob Szabo 3-1 to clinch his place in the PDC World Darts Championship second round.

Szabo, a qualifier from New Zealand, took the first set and led in the second at Alexandra Palace as 16-time world champion Taylor started slowly.

However, Taylor fired in finishes of 115, 114 and 82 to level the match.

The 53-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent took the third set and sealed victory at the ninth attempt in the fourth.

A £250,000 prize is on offer to the winner of the tournament, which ends on 1 January.
