It is about seizing opportunities when you create them for yourself. De Decker did that, he made chances and he took them. He may go quiet for a while now, but he knows he can do it now.

You really do think 'give me another chance' but he doesn't need any chance.

Luke Humphries is a champion off the board, a winner on it. When he loses, he talks so magnanimously about the man who just beat him.

The real champions see game and they saw it in Mike de Decker. What we've seen of Mike de Decker, you cannot not like him.

  3. 'There's a lot to come from De Decker'published at 22:38 British Summer Time 13 October

    Result: Humphries 4-6 De Decker

Luke Humphries speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm obviously gutted to lose. I felt like I really was just on the wires of everything, it frustrated me. I'm so proud because he showed so much bottle, he really did. I know how it felt to be in that position a year ago and I felt my heart racing and my hands shaking. He looked as cool as anything. I've grown up with Mike over the last eight/nine years, maybe 10 or 11 I don't know now. For me, it weren't my night. Sometimes, it ain't your night. Sometimes you have to accept it ain't your night. You go searching for the treble a lot. You've got a great champion and now, he's got a target on his back now like I've got."

On the game: "I felt really tired tonight. At the break at 4-1, I thought to myself 'you're not going to give the fans a poor show here, you have to come out and prove yourself and don't give up'. I came back and had two big out shots and then, 4-2, 4-3 and I thought 'it's game on now' but he didn't think about it, he got better. All credit to him, he's a great guy, a fantastic player. Well done to Mike, he was fantastic, there's a lot more big things to come from him after this."

On Mike de Decker: "Hopefully, not too many more titles because I want them. Honestly though, there's a lot to come from him, You don't play like that in a big final, you need a bit of bottle and he's got it. He's proved that and all he's got to look at, see what happened to me last year."

If you are good enough, experience counts for nothing. De Decker was good enough and that gave him all of the belief he needed.

  5. 'It feels amazing'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 13 October

    Result: Humphries 4-6 De Decker'

Mike de Decker speaking to Sky Sports: "It feels amazing. It is heavy but it feels amazing. Oh my goodness, I'm over the moon. I've been really happy with my performance all week, but this tops it off. The way Luke has been playing this last year until now has been brilliant. Being the person that beats him this weekend in the final, picking up this trophy, I have no words, I'm so, so, so, so, so, so, so happy."

On the game: "I was cool in patches. In the beginning, I was really, really, really nervous, then I calmed down. I went 4-1 up, he came back to 4-4. I started to get nerves again but I did it.

On Luke Humphries: "All of a sudden, he started hitting big finishes. I was thinking 'come on man, just stop it'. All credits to Luke, he has been a phenomenal champion for the last year, he is such a nice person."

On winning the title: "I am so, so proud. I lost my card, wasn't on tour, got my card back. My best friend, my mum, everyone, they have all been behind me and thanks to them I won this trophy. I am over the moon."

    Result: Humphries 4-6 De Decker

Mike de Decker started the 2024 World Grand Prix 36th in the PDC Order of Merit.

Unseeded and without ever reaching the last 16 at any major in his career, the 'Real Deal' has shown he is exactly that.

An 150-1 shot to win this title at the start of the tournament, he has just beaten the defending champion, world number one and five-time major winner Luke Humphries by two clear sets.

Darts has had plenty of stories to remember in recent times. This is right up there.

A less than convincing second leg to start from Luke Humphries. It takes him five darts at double 16 to get him going.

Mike de Decker, meanwhile, is using his hold of throw and his scoring, to his advantage.

Getting six darts at a finish, he misses twice at double 20, but his cushion allows him three darts at double 10, finishing off in two.

The Belgian is two legs away.

Despite that, the Belgian gets the chance to win the set with an 80 out.

  20. Humphries levels the matchpublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 13 October

    Humphries 4-4 (0-0) De Decker

Mike de Decker starts this deciding leg perfectly, but dart three landing in single three is a harsh blow and a timely reminder of how these last three sets have gone.

Luke Humphries, busting on 67, partly opens the door for De Decker, who responds with a 180.

At the second time of asking, Humphries takes out 67. It's 4-4!

    De Decker had led 4-1...

What a turnaround from the defending World Grand Prix champion.
