    *Littler 4-1 Van Gerwen (0-0)

Welcome to the party, Michael van Gerwen! That's more like it!

The Dutchman lands a 132 checkout on the bullseye to break the throw, win the fifth set and reduce his deficit to 4-1.

Luke Littler takes a swig of water before the players head off for another short break.

It's almost like a cat toying with a mouse from Luke Littler, make him [MVG] think he's doing OK then smash him with a 180 and get to a finish first. This is cruel stuff.

What does Michael van Gerwen have left? Is there any way back for the Dutchman?

Van Gerwen leaves 53 after nine darts and eventually gets it done with a shot at double 10.

  8. A whitewash?published at 21:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Littler 4-0 Van Gerwen

There's been four whitewashes in the PDC World Championship final since its inception in 1994 - but none since 2006. Phil Taylor dished out all of those.

Peter Manley was on the wrong end twice, with John Part and Dennis Priestley also getting shut out by The Power. Could Luke Littler produce another?

“Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight” sing the crowd as ABBA blares out.

Luke Littler looks keen to have this wrapped up by 10pm.

    Littler 4-0 Van Gerwen (0-0)

    This is stunning.

Luke Littler's scoring has not been at its brilliant best so far, to be honest with you, but he's been far too good for Michael van Gerwen.

Three out of 17 on the doubles for the Dutchman, while it's 12 out of 25 for Warrington's finest.

The PDC version of the World Championship has been going since 1994 and there have only been four finals in which a player has failed to win a set.

It happened to Dennis Priestley, John Part and Peter Manley (twice), with Phil Taylor the victor on all four occasions.

  11. This could be a routpublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Littler 4-0 Van Gerwen

    Dan Dawson
    Commentator on Sky Sports

There's a real chance here that the World Championship final could turn intio a rout because one of the greatest players ever to throw a dart is getting a hiding at the moment from the 17-year-old.

Littler had a bye in the quarters and semis against players just happy to be there... however, this so far is a sensational performance.

  14. Littler wins fourth setpublished at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Littler 4-0 Van Gerwen* (0-0)

Another narrow failure at a 170 checkout attempt by Luke Littler opens the door for Michael van Gerwen - but three darts at double go awry!

Littler is back for, guess what, double 10 and the 17-year-old is 4-0 up.

He's three sets away from the world title.

    Littler 3-0 Van Gerwen* (2-1)

    Just remarkable from Luke Littler.

There is still time for Michael van Gerwen to turn this around, or there should be, but if Littler keeps doing things like that - bullseye, double 10 to take out 70 - then it may already be too late.

You could almost hear the disbelief among the crowd as that last dart found its mark. Not that Littler got it but that he'd had the audacity to try to go that route.

An 88 checkout finished on double seven - this is becoming a Luke Littler procession.

A 4-0 lead in sets incoming?

    Littler 3-0 Van Gerwen* (1-0)

That double 10 is like a magnet for Luke Littler's darts at the moment.

The 17-year-old couldn't have asked for a better start to this final.

  19. MVG won't panicpublished at 20:51 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Littler 3-0 Van Gerwen (0-0)

    John Part
Former PDC world champion on Sky Sports

This is his seventh final so he understands how sets can come and go in the longer format, especially in the semis and finals.

Although he's upset with the scoreline he won't panic, he'll see some light at the end of the tunnel, whether he can reach it or not is another story.

  20. Littler wins third setpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    *Littler 3-0 Van Gerwen (0-0)

Eight out of the first 10 legs of the final went Luke Littler's way. Make it nine out of 11 now...

Littler gets another go at a 170 - just misses the bull!

Again, Michael van Gerwen isn't close enough on the scoreboard and it's Littler who finds double 10 to take a 3-0 lead in sets.
