  3. 'I think I deserved a little bit more today'published at 21:52 British Summer Time 21 July

    Result: Humphries 18-15 Van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen to Sky Sports: "When you keep playing like this, anything is possible. Of course, we all know, I didn't start the game off really well, but I still had chances and still could've been 6-4 up. You always need to look at yourself in a mirror. I made mistakes but at the end of the day I still feel I was the better player where you don't really give yourself any credit and have an injustice, it's a painful game sometimes.

"Of course, Luke is a fantastic player and we all know what he is capable of, but I think there was a little bit more for me in that game but unfortunately, there was not and then you realise I had to do a little bit more.

"I always battle, especially when I was playing like this, darts can be a little more easy sometimes. When you keep missing doubles, it is such a frustrating game sometimes, but that is the way how it is. I need to look forward, I've been coming from afar and people need to know that I never give up."

On his rivalry with Luke Humphries "I want to make it really difficult for the next few years, but that's the way how darts goes. When you battle against the best players in the world, you can win or can lose I think I deserved a little bit more than this today, even if it was a few legs. I'm a shattered to be fair."

  4. 'It can last a long time'published at 21:45 British Summer Time 21 July

    Result: Humphries 18-15 Van Gerwen

Luke Humphries on himself, Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen to Sky Sports: "All three of us, I think we have all got a little rivalry between us, nothing too bad, it's just we just all want to beat each other. Luke's a fantastic player. I can pretty much guarantee he can pick up this trophy one day. I'm just glad I did it first. Michael has already done it before. [Luke] will pick it up one day, he's got the talent and potential. I'm sure he'll be watching at home, proud of his mate winning this. I'm sure next year he will want to take it off me, so I'm going to have to get better to make sure he doesn't."

On his form: "It can last a long time as long as players don't get better. I think it's not dominance, I've just got to a level in my game where I feel really comfortable and playing well. I could've been stopped there, a couple of missed doubles. I could've been stopped against James Wade, but it was close. I've got that grit and determination, I never give in. I work incredibly hard on my game and this is the rewards I get. When I get to go home with this tomorrow, it means the world to me and my family as well tonight. Sometimes these nights don't go the way you want them too, but it's happened the way we want to and we're going to celebrate again.."

  5. 'I've felt more emotion than when I won the worlds'published at 21:39 British Summer Time 21 July

    Result: Humphries 18-15 Van Gerwen

Luke Humphries on Sky Sports: "Honestly, I've felt more emotion than when did when I won the worlds. I got a bit of luck in the end to be honest. I think Michael missed a lot to give me those chances. That 100, double top, I am going to watch that back about 100 times tonight. That was honestly the most incredible thing. I am really blessed to be up on this stage to be part of such a great sport, I am very blessed. I am very privileged to have my name on this trophy with so many great players, especially Phil Taylor, a 16-time champion. To put my name on it, I absolutely am over the moon. To do it in the same year as I won the World Championships, it is emotional, it really means the world to me.

"It's all about the fans. The fans had a good night, that's all that matters. If you all had a good night, that's all we care about. For me, winning things like this, amazing. It's all about the fans. As long as they've had a great night and we've given them good entertainment, then hat's what we're here for. We come up on this stage, we've given them a great night and we get to take home some lovely silverware. It's been a fantastic tournament, I think there has been more 100 averages than any single World Matchplay than there has been before, so it shows the standard of what I had to do to win some of those.

On Michael van Gerwen's impressive checkouts: "I was thinking 'please don't'. I was getting a little nervy to be honest at the end there, a little bit, I felt the pressure, I wouldn't lie. When I hit that first tops, I thought 'it doesn't matter how nervy I feel, just throw it into that dart and hopefully, it takes a lovely deflection' and it did. I was very fortunate at the end, he missed a couple of darts on the double. He played a fantastic part of a great game. Unfortunately, he missed a few doubles and let me in. I don't care now, I'm the Matchplay champion and it means the world to me."

Humphries, on his throw, just has to hold to win.

Van Gerwen's scoring should be too good for Humphries and after 12 darts, just needs a double eight to break back, with Humphries not on a finish of any kind.

Like the last leg, Van Gerwen misses three darts at the same double, double eight this time is the unlucky charm

Humphries checks out 100 with two tops to win 18-15.

Luke Humphries is the World Matchplay champion.

What a match, What a finish!

Another break for MVG and his fourth finish of over 100.

    Humphries 14-12 Van Gerwen

  15. Postpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time 21 July
