IPC Swimming World Championships: Scots win silvers

Dias finished ahead of Mullen

Scotland's Andrew Mullen and Scott Quin have both won silver medals on day one of the IPC Swimming World Championships at Tollcross in Glasgow.

Quin, 24, finished behind Dutchman Marc Evers in the 100m breaststroke SB14 category.

And Mullen, 18, was edged into second place by the Brazilian Daniel Dias in the 50m backstroke S5.

Mullen told BBC: "A European record and a silver medal so I can't really complain."

The Scot has four more events but again faces stiff competition from Dias.

Quin hopes his performance will ensure a place at the Rio Olympics

"I don't really pay much attention to him," said Mullen. "I just concentrate on getting faster and faster."

Both Scottish swimmers are hoping to qualify for next year's Olympics in Rio, the silver medals having clinched a place for Great Britain in Brazil.

Quin was also delighted to have done so well in his main event and said: "It is that next stepping stone.

"I'm feeling in the right place. Everything is going good.

"To be honest, it is quite surreal to think how much I've came on being a late developer in the sport."
