Tom Daley secured Team GB a place in the individual 10m platform event at the 2016 Rio Olympics by qualifying for Sunday's World Championship final.
Daley, who won gold in the team event with Rebecca Gallantree, finished third in Kazan, Russia, after scoring 524.7.
"It's actually a massive relief," Daley told BBC Sport.
"Winning with Becky in the team event gave me a bit of confidence, but it wouldn't have meant anything if I hadn't finished in the top 12 today."
Team-mate Matty Lee finished 18th and misses out on the final, while Gallantree finished 10th in the women's individual 3m springboard final.
Daley won Britain's only-ever individual diving World Championship gold medal at the 2009 Rome Worlds, when he was just 15.
He believes recreating his mentality from that final will be crucial to his bid to reclaim the title on Sunday evening - and attain Britain's fourth medal in Kazan.
"I've just got to have fun because that's what I remember having in 2009," he said.
"I wasn't thinking about any of the pressures and just went out there and enjoyed it, so hopefully I can do that again."
China's defending champion Qiu Bo (577.00) and World Cup champion Yang Jian (539.75) finished above Daley.
Meanwhile, Gallantree, 30, finished behind China's Tingmao Shi and Zi He, who claimed gold and silver respectively with Italy's Tania Cagnotto third.
Gallantree had already achieved her main aim of securing a quota place for Team GB in the event at Rio by qualifying for the final.
"It's been an up and down week for sure," said the British diver, who missed out on securing an Olympic place with synchronised partner Alicia Blagg.
"Overall though I have to be happy with the Olympic place I did get at the team gold and now I'll rest up and come back stronger next season."
