Riding the chestnut mare Diva ll, Ben overcame a five-horse jump-off to collect the title.

"There's quite a lot to lose in a jump-off that only has five riders so you have to take a few risks," said Maher.

Holland's Maikel van der Vleuten finished second, while fellow Britons Scott Brash and John Whitaker finished in fourth and fifth.

Maher's win capped a year of mixed fortunes for the London 2012 gold medallist, who dropped out of the world number two spot.
