Josh Carson indebted to Ipswich Town backing

Ipswich Town teenager Josh Carson has put Saturday's match-winning performance against Crystal Palace down to the support of his team-mates.

The 17-year-old winger netted both of Town's goals in the 2-1 win.

"It's been magnificent to have a few of the big lads to put their arm around you and say 'congratulations, well done'," he told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"They've been in the same situation I'm in and give me so much encouragement to go at players and I think that showed."

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international was making only his third start for Ipswich and says he is taking on board the instructions of manager Paul Jewell.

"He's been saying when we have the ball stay wide, that's where I can get my freedom because the full-back always tucks in," he added.

"The right-hand side's not really my favourite position because I'm on my weaker foot, but it's given me licence to cut in."

And Ipswich's record goal scorer Ray Crawford was full of praise for the Portman Road academy product.

"He's a star in the making, I hope he keeps his feet on the ground and we see a lot of the young lad," the BBC Radio Suffolk summariser said.

"He's a real team player, he makes space for himself, he's a good user of the ball, has two good feet

"I like his work rate, he comes back and defends. His all-round game looks so good, he looks mature for a 17-year-old and I would have liked to have seen him in the side a lot earlier."
