Wycombe Wanderers bullish on Gary Waddock future

Waddock sealed promotion for Wycombe on the final day

Wycombe Wanderers owner Steve Hayes is confident boss Gary Waddock will not be snapped up by a bigger club after his promotion success.

Waddock sealed third spot in League Two on Saturday, and with it League One football next season.

But Hayes admits he would not prevent his manager moving on if the right opportunity came along.

"We don't want to stand in Gary's way but equally he's loving it here," he told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"He's in the position where, in the future, if another club comes in, he will have a very good look at that club to see what it's like behind the scenes.

"Because if it's not the same as Wycombe I feel he will turn it down."

Former QPR and Aldershot boss Waddock has taken the Chairboys straight back to English football's third tier after failing to save them from relegation last season.

And Hayes is feeling confident about his side's chances of beating the drop when they try it all over again next term.

"I think there's enough about us to think we're stronger," he said.

"We want to be stronger next time in League One, we're building something here, we've got a manager and backroom staff that really know what we're trying to do.

"I look at teams like Bolton who went up to the Premier League, got relegated, went up, got relegated, but they got stronger and stronger."

And Hayes, who also owns rugby union Premiership side Wasps, says Waddock will receive financial backing to improve his squad.

"I have regular meetings with Gary and we've been talking for months," he added.

"We know what we have to do and now he's got to go out and get the players he wants to get."
