Bury manager Richie Barker has appointed Peter Shirtliff as his assistant.

The Shakers boss made the announcement on Tuesday after signing a 12-month rolling contract on his return from holiday.

Shirtliff recently served as assistant manager to Danny Wilson at Swindon Town.

The 50-year-old previously worked as assistant at Mansfield Town, where he also became manager, and Tranmere.

A veteran of more than 500 Football League appearances over 18 years, Shirtliff played as a central defender at Barnsley, Carlisle, Charlton, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After retiring in 1997 he went on to work as youth team coach at Barnsley and Leicester City.

In 2005 he became assistant at Mansfield before taking on the manager job for 15 months up to December 2006.

The following year he moved to Tranmere as assistant and moved to Swindon in June 2009.
