World Cup can raise WSL profile - Sam Chappell

Chappell has been an ever present for Liverpool this season

Liverpool Ladies defender Sam Chappell hopes England's participation in the World Cup in Germany can help raise interest in the Women's Super League.

England drew 1-1 with Mexico on Monday and face New Zealand on Friday.

"I think it will be good to raise the profile of the women's game," Chappell, 20, told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Hopefully it will raise the profile of the WSL as well and help get bigger crowds in. Hopefully people won't have forgotten about the WSL."

She added: "With that [the World Cup] being on the television it will just raise the profile a bit more and remind people of what's out there.

"If they see the players playing well, especially the English players, they'll want to come and watch them live."

Warrington-born right-back Chappell recently graduated from the England Under-19 squad and is now hoping to be selected for future under-23 and possible World Cup duty.

"Every player wants to play for their country, but you put it to the back of your mind because you've got your club to focus on," Chappell continued.

"If that opportunity comes with the under-23s then it's good, but you've got to focus on your club and do the best you can. It would be amazing to get the chance to play in a World Cup."
