Rangers remain in hunt for Dundee United's David Goodwillie

Rangers boss Ally McCoist says he has not given up hope of signing striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

But he has played down the likelihood of Australia midfielder Mile Jedinak, who has just left Genclerbirligi, signing for the Scottish champions.

"There is a little bit of work to be done there," said McCoist.

"That will be a long road before that deal is either through or not through. There's a chance, but I would have to say less than 50/50."

McCoist was speaking after completing the signing of Spanish midfielder Juan Manuel Ortiz from Almeria before departing for the club's pre-season training camp in Germany.

"We are pleased he has signed and hopefully one or two will follow and we will hopefully go on and retain the title," said the Rangers boss.

It is his first signing since taking over as boss from Walter Smith, having missed out on winger Craig Conroy, who joined Cardiff City following his departure from Dundee United, and midfielder Neil Danns, who chose Leicester City after leaving Crystal Palace.

Cardiff had emerged as favourites to sign Scotland striker Goodwillie after Rangers appeared to cool their interest after having a £1m bid rejected by United.

However, asked if he had given up hope of signing the 22-year-old who is valued at £2m by United, McCoist simply replied with a "no".

Palace have also been linked with 26-year-old Jedinak, who has been capped 26 times for his country, and McCoist appeared to hint that a deal is unlikely to be done for the Sydney-born player.

The arrival of Ortiz will increase hopes of bringing his former Osasuna team-mate, Carlos Cuellar, back to Ibrox on loan from Aston Villa.

However, progress with that appears to have slowed following the arrival of former Rangers boss Alex McLeish at Villa Park.

"I have made it clear that he is a player I would like to see back at Ibrox," said McCoist.

"But he is under contract at Aston Villa and just now it looks like it might stay that way."

McCoist has yet to have discussions with Harry Redknapp after the Tottenham Hotspur manager offered two players to Rangers on loan.

Redknapp has told Rangers owner Craig Whyte that 24-year-old South Africa defender Bongani Khumalo and 21-year-old midfielder Jake Livermore would be available.

"I have not spoken to Harry, but I will speak to Harry," added McCoist.
