Jason Brown wants Aberdeen to challenge the Old Firm

The Welsh international keeper has spent time with Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City

Aberdeen have signed goalkeeper Jason Brown ahead of their Scottish Premier League opener.

The former Blackburn Rovers keeper had a spell with Cardiff City last season and has been capped twice for Wales.

"Without a doubt the reason I've come up here is to play football. I don't want to sit on the bench. " the 29-year-old said

"All I can do is get myself in the best possible shape I can and hopefully be up for selection to play."

Aberdeen manager Craig Brown had spoken of his desire to sign another keeper to add to Columbian David Gonzalez who is on loan from Manchester City.

Former first choice keeper Jamie Langfield suffered a seizure earlier in the summer and remains some way off a return to action, but assistant manager Archie Knox believes the addition of Brown puts them in a strong postion.

"We've got three terrific goalkeepers," he said.

"It might take Jamie a wee bit of time to come back, but then we've got David until Christmas at least, so the competition will be there for them all.

"The position - like every position will be up for grabs," he added.

"It's not often that a club like Aberdeen can attract players from the Premiership to come away to a club that's the furthest north.

"It's great credit to both David and Jason that they see Aberdeen as a bigger club in the SPL and they want to play for us. It is fantastic for us."

For Brown the move to Pittodrie provides an opportunity for first team football and the chance to challenge the Old Firm.

"I've worked with a lot of players who have achieved a lot and won a lot and I want to bring that here and try and win some silverware," the former Blackburn keeper said.

"You have the big two up here. Maybe we can have a good start to the season and try and get in amongst it.

"That's got to be a realistic target. Aberdeen is a massive club.

"I've come up here because I want to achieve things."
