Redknapp 'sure' Luka Modric will stay at Tottenham

Harry Redknapp insists unsettled Luka Modric will stay at Tottenham - and wants chairman Daniel Levy to sit down and settle his differences with Chelsea's £30m transfer target.

Modric was left out of Monday's 3-0 loss at Manchester United with Redknapp saying his "head is not right".

"It has been a problem and hopefully it will get resolved and we can move on," said the Spurs boss after the defeat.

"[But] I'm sure Modric will stay. The chairman has made his mind up."

He added: "There is no point selling him so late in the transfer window because there is no time to replace him."

Modric reacted angrily after a meeting with Levy earlier this summer, when he was told he would not be sold at any price after Chelsea's opening £22m bid was rejected. It is thought the Blues have made subsequent bids for the 25-year-old Croatian to no avail.

And despite being forced to leave Modric out of his side's trip to Old Trafford, Redknapp insists he is the man to focus the midfield playmaker's mind back on to the task at hand at White Hart Lane.

"Let's be truthful. He wanted to go, but he has just got confused with it all," said Redknapp.

"Someone has made him an offer and he knows what he could earn elsewhere and sees it as an opportunity to move. He's not been in the right frame of mind but we can't go on like that, we've got to get him playing.

"If anyone can pick him up, I can. I have a great relationship with him. I can honestly say you won't meet a better boy. He's a fantastic person."

And Redknapp now wants Levy to meet Modric again in an attempt to end the saga, revealing that Spurs are ready to offer him an improved contract.

The Spurs manager is confident deals can be concluded for the loan arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City and signing of Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid, and hopes they will help convince Modric of the club's ambition.

"The chairman has just got to sit down with him and have a chat," he added.

"They fell out a little bit over the first meeting and if they can have a meeting and resolve the whole situation that would be good.

"Daniel needs to tell him that we want him here, that he's important to us and a big player for us. If we show him we'll bring players in and we are an ambitious club you might find the boy will be ok.

"You've got to prove you're ambitious and the chairman has said he will look at his contract in a month or two. He's told me he will do that."

On the club's transfer targets, Redknapp added: "I have said all along that we just need to change one or two characters at the club and bring in one or two that will give us a little bit more backbone, a bit of grit.

"I know exactly the sort of player we want and if the chairman can go out and get them, fantastic."
