Hamilton Accies have signed midfielder Paul Currie from Berwick Rangers after paying a four-figure fee to the Third Division club.

The Division One club had their first bid for the 26-year-old rejected on Tuesday.

But, after a higher offer proved acceptable, Currie signed a contract until the end of the season.

He is ineligible for Sunday's Ramsdens Cup tie against Morton as he is cup-tied with Berwick from earlier rounds.

Accies manager Billy Reid told his club website: "I am pleased to bring in Paul.

"He has shown desire and workrate and he will be a good addition to us here at Accies."

Currie attracted the attention of the Division One club after scoring 21 goals in 78 appearances for the Third Division outfit.

He was watched during pre-season and impressed on trial at New Douglas Park.

Currie joined Berwick from junior outfit Musselburgh Athletic in July 2009.

He had previous senior experience with Raith Rovers.

Currie scored a penalty as Berwick sprung a surprise by knocking First Division outfit Partick Thistle out of Scottish Communities League Cup 3-1 at Firhill last month.

His arrival at Hamilton coincided with 20-year-old Accies midfielder Kyle Wilkie picking up a ruptured achilles tendon injury at training on Wednesday morning.

Wilkie, who had returned to the side after injury and illness, will undergo surgery on Thursday and is expected to on the sidelines for up to six months.
