Carlisle United have extended the loan spell of Newcastle full-back James Tavernier for a further two months, after an impressive initial stint.

The 20-year-old has featured in eight games for the Cumbrians in the absence of US international Frank Simek, who is sidelined with a hip problem.

"He's found a bit of form, James has been getting better and consistent," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"He's enjoying himself and we're enjoying having him here."

Tavernier added: "It's given us chance to get Frank sorted out - losing him has been a blow."
