Tom Cleverley signs new four-year Manchester United deal

Cleverley started his first Premier League game for United against West Brom on the opening day of the season

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has welcomed midfielder Tom Cleverley's decision to sign a new four-year contract at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old, who is currently recovering from a foot injury, came through United's academy system.

Ferguson told the club's website: "Tom is one of the brightest prospects in the English game.

"He has a good footballing brain which, coupled with his energy and ability, makes for a player with a fine future."

Cleverley made his competitive debut for United in August's 3-2 Community Shield victory over Manchester City and the same month was called into the national squad for the first time.

He said: "It's been a fantastic start to the season, breaking into the first team and getting an England call-up."

Although he was named in the England squad to face the Netherlands at Wembley in August, the game was cancelled by the Football Association after the riots in London.

England boss Fabio Capello also brought Cleverley into the initial squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales in September, but he was released before both games.

However, the Italian coach said Cleverley would feature in England's next two friendly matches.

His plan to play the midfielder in the match against Spain at Wembley in November may be scuppered though after Cleverley suffered ligament damage in a 5-0 win at Bolton.
