Full-back Matt Tootle believes fitness levels must improve at Crewe if they are to end their poor run of form.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "It needs to get better and its been something that's needed to change.
"The fitter we get, the longer we can keep the tempo up and do what teams do to us more often."
in their first match under new boss Steve Davis.
And Tootle thinks a fresh approach from a new manager will have an impact.
"There's different types of fitness," continued Tootle. "It's something that will come with gradually improving the tempo of training.
"It's going to be something that will win us more games, especially when we go behind in games."
The Alex are currently 18th in League Two, six points above the relegation zone and 10 points away from a play-off place.
