Wrexham midfielder Lee Fowler signs for Fleetwood Town

Wrexham's Lee Fowler has signed for Blue Square Bet Premier title rivals Fleetwood for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old former Coventry City and Wales Under-21 midfield man, who joined the Robins last January, signed a new two-year deal in the summer.

But Fowler submitted a written transfer request shortly after Christmas and has now opted to join the team just two points behind Wrexham in the table.

"He wanted to go for personal reasons," said chief executive David Roberts.

"We're sorry to lose Lee. But we thank him for his services."

Playing for his 12th professional club, Fowler has struggled to recapture his form since suffering a spell out due to a knee injury in October and has become unsettled following the departure of former manager Dean Saunders to Doncaster Rovers.

"It's not something I've thought about lightly," said Fowler, when handing in his request. "I'm happy off the field. Unfortunately I'm not happy at the football club.

Wrexham player-manager Morrell said a move would be in the best interests of both club and player.

"I think he's a fabulous player," said Morrell. "But, however good you are, if you are not fully right and not focused on the job in hand then maybe it is time to move on.

"It's his decision - he felt he was not playing particularly well and that he is not happy."

Fowler, who turned down offers from Football League clubs to sign a deal with Wrexham, scored twice in 22 games for the Welsh club.

"There's no falling out with anyone," added Fowler. "Mozza's disappointed that I'm going and he'd love me to stay. But, unfortunately in football, these things happen."
