Cardiff City have had a bid turned down for Blackpool winger Matt Phillips, BBC Wales understands.

It is believed the Bluebirds' Championship rivals have rejected an offer of around £800,000.

Phillips, 20, has scored seven goals in his last six games for Blackpool, which includes two hat-tricks.

He made 27 appearances for the Tangerines in the Premier League last season, having joined for £325,000 from Wycombe Wanderers in August 2010.

Scotland manager Craig Levein is monitoring the England Under-20 international, who qualifies for Scotland through the grandparent rule.

Phillips spent a month on loan with Sheffield United earlier in the season but has made a significant impact since returning to Bloomfield Road.

Earlier in January, promotion contenders Cardiff made an unsuccessful bid for Brighton winger Craig Noone, external.
