Southend United have completed the signing of defender Pat Baldwin from Essex rivals Colchester United on a free transfer.

The former Chelsea trainee, 29, has left the U's after almost 10 years at the club having been restricted to just five starts this season.

The centre-back had a spell on loan at Southend in the 2009-10 campaign.

"As soon as it was a possibility to come, it felt completely right," Baldwin told the Shrimpers' website.

"With the team flying I think this will get that enthusiasm and fire back into my belly again."

Baldwin goes straight into the squad for Tuesday night's home match with Swindon in League Two and becomes the Blues' sixth signing of the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, youngsters Kyle Asante and Teddy Nesbitt have left Southend on loan.

Asante has joined Thurrock for a month whilst Nesbitt has gone to Great Wakering Rovers.
