Motherwell's Jamie Murphy happy to wait for right move

Murphy discussed the Blackpool bid with his family but decided to stay at Well

Motherwell forward Jamie Murphy says he turned down the chance of a move to Blackpool because the deadline-day offer was not right for him.

The Championship club had a bid accepted on Tuesday, but Murphy decided to stay at Fir Park, for now at least.

The 22-year-old retains an ambition to play in England in the future.

"I believe I'm good enough to play down there. Hopefully, between now and the end of the season, I can show that," he told BBC Scotland.

But Murphy stresses his decision was no reflection on Blackpool, who reportedly tabled a bid in the region of £200,000.

"I don't think it's about aiming higher. I was definitely flattered by the offer they made and I'm just glad a team like Blackpool know who I am," he said.

"It's not about waiting for a bigger club, it's just that the deal wasn't right for me."

The Scotland Under-21 international says, once he heard of Blackpool's interest, he discussed the matter with his parents and they collectively decided he should stay with Motherwell until the end of the season before considering a move.

"I've known nothing different than playing up here and I enjoy it here," he said.

"I know it was the right decision. It's just about proving it to other people."

One man delighted to see Murphy stay was his manager, Stuart McCall, who said the club's decision to accept Blackpool's bid was purely a financial one.

"I thought this window we'd possibly lose a player. I think that's the financial state at nearly every club," McCall told BBC Scotland.

"I was at a game and got a call to say we'd accepted a bid - certainly not a valuation myself or the staff would put on him.

"We value him higher than that, but needs must sometimes.

"But 45 minutes later, I got a call to say Jamie had declined and he wanted to stay, so from a manager's point of view, I was delighted at that.

"I said prior to the window that, if we could have the same squad going into the last part of the season, I would be pleased and we've got that."

McCall acknowledges he might well lose Murphy at the end of the season but believes, if he can become more consistent, the striker will command a fee double the value of Blackpool's bid.

"He's certainly got the talent," added the manager. "Sometimes it's about finding where is his best position - through the middle or coming in from wide, he can take people on either side, he can finish.

"There's no doubt, with the ability the kid's got, he can aim high."
