Manager Andy Morrell signs new Wrexham contract

Boss Andy Morrell has given Wrexham's Football League promotion push a boost as the player/manager has signed a new two-year contract extension.

Morrell has lost four Blue Square Bet Premier games since Dean Saunders in October 2011.

The 37-year-old's new deal is to be player/manager for one more year, then a second year as just Racecourse boss.

"I'm delighted," said Morrell, whose side are second to leaders Fleetwood.

"I couldn't have wished it to have gone any better.

"The lads have been absolutely fantastic and I give them all the credit as they could have used it as an excuse but they didn't.

"They got on with the job, I tried to be good with them and they have been brilliant with me.

"We're on the up and have every chance of doing well."

Morrell's assistant manager Billy Barr, formerly assistant to Alan Irvine at Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday, has also signed a new contract until the summer of 2014.

Morrell's Wrexham trail top-of-the-table Fleetwood Town by nine points, with one game in hand, but play the leaders in a potential crucial clash on Tuesday.

The Welsh club led the table until the end of January but Fleetwood are now in pole position to claim the one automatic promotion berth to the Football League.

Wrexham are guaranteed a second successive season in the Conference play-offs as the Racecourse team bid to restore their Football League status after four years in the non-league.

The former Premier League striker was put in temporary charge of Wrexham in September 2011 when Saunders joined Championship side Doncaster Rovers before being appointed on a full-time basis in the October.

Morrell has now signed an extended deal after agreeing terms with the club's owners, the Wrexham Supporters Trust, with just six games remaining of the current Blue Square Bet Premier season.

And Morrell insists reassurances of a summer transfer kitty was not a "concern."

"My only concern is these last six games, play well for the team, make sure the team plays well and give it everything to try and get up," said Morrell.

"Then we can look at where we are, budgets and what is available for next year but, at the moment, the full concentration on the last six games."
