Steve Coppell has been appointed director of football at Crawley Town.
The former Bristol City, Reading and Brighton manager, 56, takes up the new post the day after manager Steve Evans quit to take charge at Rotherham.
Coppell will oversee "football operations", while Craig Brewster will remain as caretaker manager.
Chief executive Alan Williams told the club's website:, external "Steve's background and pedigree will help us achieve our aims of pushing into League One and beyond."
Crawley, Blue Square Bet Premier champions last season, are currently fourth in League Two after beating Barnet 2-1 on Monday.
Williams added: "Bringing someone with Steve's stature in football as well as his experience and detailed knowledge of the game to Crawley Town is another important milestone in the development of the club."
Crawley co-owner Susan Carter told BBC Sussex: "We've got ambitions for the club and we've made a promise that we will always continue to seek to improve it.
"Steve [Coppell] likes what has happened at Crawley and wanted to come. He brings a wealth of experience over many years and many different levels. You need that, especially at a club that has ambitions.
"He'll assess everything and we'll be working very closely with him.
"The main thing now is to get back into the automatic promotion slots."
