Dover Athletic boss Nicky Forster to register as a player

Dover Athletic manager Nicky Forster is making a playing return.

The 38-year-old striker, who scored 220 goals in 720 career appearances, will register himself to play for the Blue Square Bet South side next season.

He told the BBC's Non League Show: "A number of times last season we weren't ruthless enough in front of goal.

"I think I could add to the squad at no extra cost, so it would free up money to bring an extra striker in. It will increase competition for places."

The former Brentford, Reading and Brighton striker added: "I've spoken to managers past and present who've combined the two.

"It's more difficult to do it than it was, but I think the benefits outweigh the negatives."

Forster is confident his coaching staff can cope should he take his place on the pitch.

"The canvas of management is so huge you have got to learn to delegate," he continued.

"You have to have staff around you who are understanding of your ideas and values and I think I've got that with Steve Brown, my assistant, and the physio and everyone else who's on board.

"I don't expect to play 42 games next season, I'll play when needed and I fully understand I'm not the future."
