Nicky Wroe scored on his debut as League One Preston dumped Championship Huddersfield out of the League Cup.

The hosts fielded a side with 10 summer signings, with only goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann surviving the summer cull.

Jack King's deft header put Preston ahead and Wroe converted Chris Beardsley's low cross to make it 2-0.

Lee Novak missed a chance to pull a goal back after the break, failing to get to Paul Dixon's cross, while Oscar Gobern also fluffed an opportunity.

Westley pleased with 'good start'

"We all knew that it was going to be a difficult pre-season for us.

"We knew that we had a lot of people coming together, trying to learn a new way of playing.

"You're hopeful that you can do it quickly enough to start the season in the right shape. We've got to make sure we don't get too carried away with the performance.

"It was a good start, but we've got to get in the right mindset to start our league campaign in a similar way at the weekend."
