Torquay 4-2 Rochdale

A Rene Howe brace helped 10-man Torquay on their way to victory over Rochdale.

Andrew Tutte fired Dale in front early on, but the Gulls drew level when Billy Bodin finished a superb passing move.

Aaron Downes capitalised on confusion in the visitors' defence to put the hosts in front before Howe's strike doubled their advantage.

Howe's second came from a delightful chip, before Downes saw red for fouling George Donnelly and Ray Putterill got a late Dale consolation.

Torquay United manager Martin Ling told BBC Radio Devon:

We always cause problems - Ling

"It's been a big three points for us today, it's been two decent performances at the start of the season.

"Today was a good all round performance. It was exciting I'm sure for the fans, as an attacking force we always ask questions.

"Defensively we could've been better but when needed people stood up, people like Michael Poke, and we got a good win [against] a good side.

"Both teams played with a purpose and a cutting edge, both managers are forward-thinking managers and want to pass the ball and hurt teams."
