Mark Hughes embarrassed at QPR defeat by Swansea

QPR manager Mark Hughes said there were no excuses for his side's crushing 5-0 home defeat by Swansea and called the performance "embarrassing".

Hughes accused his players of "falling flat on their faces" in their Premier League opener at Loftus Road.

Nathan Dyer and Michu each scored twice while Scott Sinclair also netted.

"If you're not careful it can be embarrassing if you're two or three behind and you're chasing the game," said Hughes.

"It was certainly that."

QPR only beat the drop on the final day of last season.

And Hughes says his side will have to show a remarkable improvement if they are to avoid another season of struggle after watching his players outclassed and out-fought by impressive Swansea.

"A number of individuals did OK but the team performance was nowhere near where it needed to be," added the Welshman.

"You can make all the excuses you want, but it doesn't wash with me.

"It's unacceptable and highlights there are players who are not where they need to be.

"We chased the game when we didn't have to. We became ragged and made bad decisions.

"We're desperately disappointed with that.

"In the end we didn't deserve anything from the game so we have to improve remarkably.

"We've been riding on the crest of good will, but we fell flat on our faces. It is a wake up call for us."

Keeper Robert Green was guilty of a glaring error which allowed Michu to start the rout.

But Hughes refused to blame the former West Ham keeper, who was making his league debut for QPR.

"He will be disappointed with that, but I was more concerned with what was happening in front of him," added the QPR boss, who attempted to put a positive spin on a shocking opening day performance by his team.

He said: "It might be the making of us to be honest.

"All in all it is a poor start to the season but it could be a blessing, get it out of the way, get it out of the system, and come back."
