St Mirren 5-4 Ross County

Ross County slumped to a second successive defeat as Steven Thompson's late goal decided an unbelievable game.

The visitors took the lead through Iain Vigurs, Thompson equalised, but County regained the lead through Grant Munro.

A Lewis Guy penalty early in the second half, Sam Parkin's close-range finish and Kenny McLean's long-range strike put St Mirren two ahead.

Two goals in two minutes from Rocco Quinn looked to have given County a draw until Thompson's overhead kick.

There was little expectation of the flurry of goals to come with only one goal scored by the entire County line-up this season, that coming from Sam Morrow.

And a sense of irony is clearly alive and well in Paisley as the sound of the Beach Boys blared out while a bitter north wind blew the length of the stadium.

However, it was County who did the early pressing, with Morrow unfortunate not to connect better with a Quinn cross from the right.

Chances were at a premium until, out of nowhere, an incisive County breakaway left Vigurs free on the edge of the box and the midfielder curled his shot past Craig Samson into the net.

The small band of Highland fans were making all the noise as their team continued to belie their defensive reputation, with the St Mirren midfield struggling to find their passes.

As Paisley skies darkened, goalmouth opportunities became ever more limited and, when the home side finally carved out a chance, Steven Thompson's header from Dummett's free-kick flew safely into Michael Fraser's arms.

It was a taste of things to come as Thompson headed home Jim Goodwin's corner at the near post to level.

The Paisley side could have taken a dramatic lead as Fraser was forced to stretch to divert a Thompson header past the post.

However, it was the visitors who regained the advantage as Munro bundled home a Vigurs free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

The second half began as the first had, with County in the ascendant and another Vigurs corner was headed just over by Munro.

St Mirren, though, were awarded a spot-kick when Thompson was tripped after Scott Boyd had cleared his initial shot off the line.

Guy took the penalty, which he crashed into the roof of the net.

The home side were a different proposition now with the game stretched and Parkin tucked home a header from David Van Zanten's cross.

Play was raging from end to end and Samson pulled off a great save low to his right from another Vigurs free-kick.

Substitute Kenny McLean seemed to have put the match beyond County with a rasping left-footed 25-yard drive.

However, Quinn collected a pass form the left in the box and coolly slotted home from 15 yards to give County hope.

Seconds later, it was Quinn again who lashed the ball home to level a quite incredible match.

The sting in the tail for County came when Graham Carey's cross was met by a sublime overhead kick from Thompson to finish a breathtaking encounter.
