Sheffield Wednesday: Dave Jones wants 'proper' defence

Sheffield Wednesday boss Dave Jones has accused his team of not defending properly after their 2-0 Capital One Cup defeat by Southampton.

The Owls have now lost five successive league and cup matches.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's frustrating because we've had some good chances but you need to keep the back door shut.

"We're not concentrating at vital times, we're not defending properly and defenders aren't doing their jobs."

He added: "I want to see some fire in their bellies and I want to see some answers from them saying 'we're going to defend properly'.

"Defending is a simple art - you head it, you kick it and you tackle but we seem to have lost that art at the moment."

A brace from Saints striker Jay Rodriguez consigned the Owls, who have conceded 12 goals in five games, to defeat.

Assistant manger Paul Wilkinson had said on Monday that the players remained confident, but Jones believes that is something they are struggling with.

"I think there's a lack of urgency in our play and that comes down to confidence," he continued.

"Every player at every club will have a period where their confidence is drained but no-one can you inject you with it, you have to work hard to get it back."

Wednesday travel to Wolves on Saturday, looking for their first win since beating Fulham in the second round of the League Cup on 28 August.
