Michael Carvill's goal late in extra-time earned Linfield a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Coleraine in the League Cup clash at the Showgrounds.

Carvill curled in a glorious free-kick winner in the 120th minute.

Glentoran needed a penalty shoot-out to see off Institute at Drumahoe after the scoreline was 2-2 after extra-time.

Stuart Elliott put the Glens ahead only for Darren McAuley and Michael McCrudden to put Stute ahead before Marcus Kane levelled on 92 minutes.

Elliott hammered in a glorious strike on 25 minutes before McAuley (61) and McCrudden (64) scored two Institute goals within three minutes.

The home team looked set to claim a major cup scalp but Kane brought the game into extra-time with his scrambled goal.

In the shoot-out, Dean Jarvis' attempted chip went over the crossbar while Elliott Morris saved Alan Walsh's shot.

Jay Magee's hit Glentoran's winning penalty.

At the Coleraine Showgrounds, Blues goalscorer Carvill hit the woodwork in the second half of normal time while Ryan Henderson also shot straight at Gavin Cullen when he only had the keeper to beat.

Former Donegal Celtic player Henderson also missed a couple of first-half half-chances.

Carvill curled in the glorious free-kick winner after he himself had been fouled by Kyle McVey.
