Wolves sign winger Jermaine Pennant from Stoke City on loan

Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Jermaine Pennant from Stoke City on an emergency three-month loan.

The former Liverpool winger arrives following a spate of injuries to wide men that has robbed Wolves of summer signings Razak Boukari and Slawomir Peszko, as well as Stephen Hunt.

The 29-year-old's chances have proved limited since Michael Kightly moved the other way from Wolves in the summer.

Pennant's previous stay in the West Midlands was with Birmingham City.

Blues signed the notorious former England Under-21 international, initally on loan, from Arsenal in January 2005, before he earned a big-money move to Liverpool in the summer of 2006.

"We're very pleased Stoke have agreed for Jermaine Pennant to join us on loan for an initial three-month period," said Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey.

"Our manager Stale Solbakken wanted to find a high-quality replacement for our injured wingers.

"He is a high-quality player and Stale is delighted to have secured his services until at least the new year."

Nottingham-born Pennant started his league career at Arsenal, making headlines when Arsene Wenger paid £2m for him as a 15-year-old Notts County youth team player in 1999.

But he failed to live up to expectations with the Gunners, and was loaned out first to Watford and Leeds United before being signed by Steve Bruce for Blues.

He then made 81 appearances for Liverpool after Rafa Benitez brought him to Anfield for £6.7m.

After being released by Liverpool in the summer of 2009 following a loan move to Portsmouth, Pennant then spent a relatively unsuccessful season at Spanish club Real Zaragoza.

He has played 77 times in the top flight for Stoke since joining them on loan from Zaragoza in August 2010 before signing for £2.8m on a two-and-a-half-year deal four months later.
