Southend United have signed Leyton Orient midfielder Marc Laird on loan until early January.

The 26-year-old former Manchester City youth player will be available for Saturday's League Two visit of York.

He will also be able to play in FA Cup fixtures but is cup tied for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

"Marc will add something that we are lacking in the middle of the park," Southend manager Paul Sturrock told the club's website., external

"He's a good passer and he will add some strength and experience there.

"We still probably need another player in there and hopefully we can make that happen next week now."

The Shrimpers could be without six players this weekend, with Michael Timlin (ankle), Luke Prosser (glute), Mark Phillips (groin), Neil Harris, Ryan Leonard (hamstring) and Barry Corr (groin) all struggling.
