Burnley are set to appoint ex-Watford boss Sean Dyche as their new manager.

The Clarets, currently 14th in the Championship table, have been without a manager since Eddie Howe left Turf Moor to return to AFC Bournemouth.

In his only season in charge at Vicarage Road, Dyche guided the Hornets to 11th in the second tier - their highest finish for four years.

But the 41-year-old was , external in July and replaced by Gianfranco Zola.

, external and Steve Lomas of St Johnstone were among those linked with the vacancy at Burnley, but the Lancashire club are set to put their faith in Dyche to lead them into the Championship promotion race.

Youth team coach Terry Pashley won the first two of his three matches in caretaker charge of the first team, but his temporary reign ended with a 4-0 defeat at Cardiff on Saturday.

And Pashley says the first task for the new manager will be to solve the problem of Burnley's leaky defence.

The Clarets have conceded 29 goals in 13 league games so far this season - the worst record in the Championship.

"I think that's plainly obvious," Pashley told BBC Radio Lancashire after losing heavily to the new league leaders at the weekend.

"It was a disappointing day and a disappointing performance. We've come to a tough place and we haven't recovered from the first goal."
