Mark Hughes would welcome ugly win as QPR lose again

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes said he would happily trade good performances for their first league victory of the season after his side suffered a seventh defeat at Stoke.

The Hoops enjoyed plenty of possession at Britannia Stadium but Charlie Adam's 52nd-minute strike gave Stoke the win.

"We can't keep on thinking that we're doing OK, because we're not winning Premier League games," said Hughes.

"I'd rather play poorly and get the win, because that's what we need."

QPR had enough chances to snatch at least a point but failed to make the most of them, with mercurial midfielder Adel Taarabt particularly wasteful.

The defeat, coupled with Southampton's 1-1 draw at home to Swansea, means QPR are bottom of the Premier League table after 11 games.

"We had a lot of possession and created a lot of good chances," said Hughes, "but you have to take those chances. We didn't and the significance of the first goal was huge.

"It was a real shame for the guys at the back because I thought they were magnificent. In general play we were getting the ball down and creating chances but, as always, you have to take them when they present themselves.

"Adel Taarabt caused Stoke problems for long periods. He was really positive in his work but at key moments maybe he shot when he should have passed and vice-versa, but it was not just Adel and we need to start getting those key decisions right."

The west London side host Southampton in their next game, and victory will be seen as vital for both clubs' hopes of avoiding the drop.

Hughes said: "We will keep on working hard. The players are giving everything and they are devastated in the dressing room because they know they deserved something from the game.

"It wasn't to be but we will pick ourselves up. It is a huge game against Southampton and we will make sure we are ready for that."

QPR owner Tony Fernandes, who was in the stands at Stoke, tweeted: "We [have] got to cut out errors. One error cost us and we [have] got to take our chances.

"Team played as planned. Must win next win. No panic. Table is compressed. Defence was awful now fairly solid. Midfield strong. Got to score now."

Asked whether he feels he still has the support of his superiors, Hughes added: "Absolutely. It is difficult for everybody because we are desperate to get that win everybody feels we deserve."
