Preston North End eased past League Two leaders Gillingham in the first FA Cup meeting between the two teams.

The Lilywhites took the lead when Jeffrey Monakana's deflected shot found the back of the net after the Gills defence failed to clear a free kick.

The lead was doubled when Stuart Beavon side-footed home after a poor back-pass by visiting defender Callum Davies.

Gillingham's Deon Burton hit the post with a penalty after John Welsh handled as Preston moved into the third round.

Gillingham manager Martin Allen told BBC Radio Kent:

Gills superb for 80 minutes - Allen

"In the first 10 minutes we were slow coming out, but for the next 80 minutes we were superb.

"That goal just before half-time was why I made two changes, to put two wingers at full-back, so you attack because if you go out you may as well go out in style.

"The lads were terrific in the second half, got a penalty, unfortunately it didn't go in, but we kept going and couldn't get that goal that would have made the difference.

"Against a team from a division above we've given a very good account of ourselves but didn't manage to score."
